After more than 12 years of photographing weddings in Barcelona and across Spain, I’ve learned that your wedding morning can set the tone for everything that follows. I’ve photographed mornings that felt completely calm — music playing softly, everyone laughing, champagne being poured, and plenty of time for the little moments to happen naturally. I’ve also seen mornings where everyone rushed from one thing to another, checked the clock, and felt stressed before the ceremony even started.

Wedding is rarely about everything going perfectly and following the planned timeline minute by minute. Something won't go exactly to plan, and that’s completely fine. What makes the biggest difference is giving yourself enough time to breathe, be present, and enjoy the morning with the people around you. It’s going to be the best day of your life; you just need to be present and let everything happen.

After seeing so many wedding mornings, I’ve put together the tips I genuinely recommend to my couples. They’re simple, practical tips that can help you start your wedding day feeling relaxed and stress-free — while also creating beautiful, natural photos that show how the morning actually felt.

Choose the getting ready room carefully

When choosing where to get ready, look for a space with:

  • Large windows and natural daylight
  • Enough space for everyone to move comfortably

Many wedding villas and hotels in Barcelona have a special bridal suite with stunning light and plety of room (those suites in Gran Villa Rosa and at Mas Huix are my favorite so far)— but it’s often taken over by hair and makeup stations first. Make sure there’s enough daylight left for you and your closest people, too. Natural light creates softer photos, calmer energy, and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Put some music on

Getting ready in complete silence can make the morning feel much more serious and stressful than it actually is. Prepare a playlist that you and your friends genuinely love — 90s summer hits, guilty pleasures, songs you always dance to together… whatever puts you in a good mood. Bring a small speaker and let the music play while you’re having breakfast, getting your hair and makeup done, helping each other with dresses, and getting excited for the day ahead.

Make time for a proper breakfast

It’s easy to think, “I’ll have something light later if I get hungry.” But with hair, makeup, getting dressed, photographs, and everything else happening around you, “later” can easily turn into the wedding reception. Your next proper meal might be hours away, so make sure you have something filling and enjoyable in the morning. Keep some snacks and plenty of water nearby too.

I’ve seen brides get so caught up in the excitement that they completely forget to eat. And while it might seem like a small thing at the time, being hungry, tired, and dehydrated can really affect how you feel later in the day. So please — eat breakfast. You’ll thank me when you’re still full of energy on the dance floor that evening.

Practise putting on your dress

Before the big day, decide who you would like to help you into your dress. If it has lots of buttons, complicated lacing, hooks or a tricky fastening, ask that person to practise beforehand. Knowing who is helping you — and how the dress works — means you can enjoy the moment instead.

And think about who you actually want in the room. Maybe it’s your mum and maid of honour. Maybe it’s all your bridesmaids. Or perhaps you’d rather have a quiet moment with just one person. There’s no right way to do it. Choose what feels meaningful to you.

Leave some breathing room in your timeline

If I could give you just one practical piece of advice, this would probably be it: leave some empty space in your wedding morning. Give yourself an extra 20 or 30 minutes with no particular plan. If everything goes perfectly, you can use that time to sit with your bridesmaids, have another coffee, take a few extra photographs, or simply breathe.

As a photographer, I love having this breathing room too. It means I can follow what’s actually happening instead of constantly watching the clock.

And finally… don’t try to make it perfect

Your wedding morning is not another checklist you need to complete successfully. Something will probably go slightly wrong. Someone might be late. A button might be difficult. Your timeline might move by 15 minutes. And that’s okay. Laugh when something goes wrong. Cry if you feel emotional. Dance with your friends. Hug your mum. Sit quietly for a few minutes if you need to. You don’t have to make every moment look perfect for the photographs. Just be there. I’ll take care of the photographs.

Some of the most beautiful images I’ve taken as a wedding photographer in Barcelona have come from these completely unplanned moments — when a bride finally takes a deep breath, when her friends start laughing, when her mum fixes her veil, or when everyone forgets about the timeline for a few minutes. So leave yourself some space, slow down, and enjoy it.

Your wedding morning isn’t something to get through before the real celebration begins. It’s already part of your story.

Your wedding morning doesn’t need to be perfect. The quiet moments, the laughter with your closest friends, your mum helping with the final details, that deep breath before you walk out the door — these are the moments you’ll remember long after the wedding is over.

As a wedding photographer in Barcelona, my role is about more than taking beautiful photographs. I’m there to help you feel comfortable, stay present, and enjoy your day while quietly capturing everything as it naturally unfolds.
