Planning a wedding abroad is an exciting adventure, which also comes with its own set of challenges, not only for the couple but also for the guests. In this blog post, I’ll provide tips on navigating travel documents, booking accommodations (and which areas in Barcelona you must avoid), immersing in local Spanish culture, and ensuring the best wedding day.

▪️Travel Docs & Visas

Ensure your passport is valid and check visa requirements. Compile all travel details into a digital folder to avoid last-minute scrambles! FYI: U.S. citizens can travel to most countries in the Schengen Area (including Spain, France, Italy, etc.) for up to 90 days within 180 days without a visa for tourism or business purposes. The passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your entry date. And remember about travel insurance to avoid any unexpected expenses and surprises.

▪️Tickets & Accommodation

Think of your travel plans as the first chapter of your adventure! Choose charming accommodations near the wedding venue to enhance the experience and connect with other guests. Expect to pay between €80 and €150 per night for a standard hotel room in a decent area of Barcelona. “No-go” zones in the city: El Raval and El Born: trust me, you don’t want to be there at night!

▪️Immerse in Local Culture

Explore historic neighborhoods, local festivals, and delicious local food! These are my must-visit local activities if you’re staying in Barcelona:

  • Festa Major de Gràcia (Mid-August)
  • Primavera Sound Festival (Late May to early June)
  • Sant Jordi’s Day (April 23).

Tip for food-hunters in Spain: look for traditional bodegas, often tucked away in quieter streets. These small, family-run establishments serve homemade dishes and local wines at reasonable prices. Try the “menú del día” (menu of the day) for a hearty meal that showcases regional flavors.

▪️Explore Unique Attractions

Remind guests to visit landmarks and hidden gems, not only your wedding. If going to Barcelona, I suggest planning a visit to Sagrada Familia (guided tour and visiting the tower), enjoying the sunset at Bunkers del Carmel, getting lost in Parc del Laberint d’Horta, or Cemetery of Montjuïc, and having a refreshing getaway to Costa Brava.

▪️Pack Smart

Make a checklist of essentials, including attire for the wedding, casual outfits for exploring, and comfy shoes. Don’t forget chargers, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. We care about the planet, don’t we?

▪️Arrive Early

Consider arriving a few days before the wedding to acclimate to the new location and enjoy local sights. This also allows your guests to spend quality time with others and share the excitement leading up to the big day!

Planning to have a rehearsal party before the big day? Feel free to contact me, and I’ll provide you with an “early-bird” customised offer for 2027.

▪️Stay Connected

Set up a group chat with other guests to inform everyone about plans and activities. This way, you can coordinate outings, share tips, and ensure everyone feels included in the festivities. Consider using a specific hashtag for the wedding so everyone can share their photos and relive the memories together later!

▪️Bring Souvenirs

Consider bringing back souvenirs that reflect the beauty of Spain for your family and yourself. My personal advice is to consider traditional Spanish fans, local ceramics, or a bottle of authentic Spanish olive oil or wine.
